You don't need to learn how to lead.
You need to get back to doing it.
Somewhere between the interruptions, the inbox and the endless list of things only you can apparently deal with, the strategic version of you got buried. Not lost. Buried. It's still there, underneath the firefighting.
That's the problem I work on.
I help time-poor headteachers stop firefighting so they can get back to the strategic work they were actually appointed to do. Not by teaching my clients new leadership models. They don't need more theory. I give my clients the time, space and structure they need to use the skills they already have.
Here's what that looks like in practice.
- You get back upstream, out of constant reaction and into planning ahead of the problem, not behind it.
- You delegate without the guilt that currently stops you doing it.
- You set boundaries and actually keep them, instead of watching them dissolve by Tuesday.
- You start seeing what's coming, instead of just responding to what's already landed.
This isn't about wellbeing tips or resilience hacks. It's about restoring your capacity to lead the way you know you're capable of, and were doing before the role's demands crowded it out.
Seven years as a headteacher, through a pandemic and its lockdowns, through a site expansion, and through growing a school from a 1.5-form entry primary no-one wanted to send their children to, to an oversubscribed two-form entry.
I know what it is to be accountable to close to a thousand people, staff, pupils, parents, governors, the inspectorate, and to feel the urgent constantly threaten to swallow the important. I've lived the exact gap I now help other heads close, which is why this isn't theory borrowed from a textbook. It's a way back that I've walked myself.
If you're a headteacher who still loves the job, still believes in your school community, and isn't looking to leave, but who knows you're capable of more strategic, intentional leadership than you're currently able to access, this is exactly the work I do.
You're not in crisis. You don't need rescuing. You're a capable leader temporarily stuck in the wrong operational mode, and that's a solvable problem.
