Coaching & consultancy support for headteachers

Is this you?

  • As a headteacher, the buck stops with you, always, and there's no putting it down.
  • Your to-do list is a bottomless pit, and half of it isn't even work only you can do.
  • You know you'd never let a member of staff run on empty like this, yet here you are.
  • Your kids go to your other half first now, and your friends have stopped hearing from you much at all.
  • You've tried to fix this yourself. Calendars, early nights, network meetings. It hasn't stuck.

Get back to leading the way you know you can.

Coaching and consultancy support for headteachers who are still capable, still committed, and tired of firefighting instead of leading.

At school

You became a headteacher because you're a strategic thinker. You were promoted for your ability to see the bigger picture, make values-driven decisions and lead with vision. But right now, that version of you is buried. Roughly 85% of headship is interruption, and you feel every bit of it. Your day rarely goes to plan because it can't, urgent demands arrive constantly and take precedence over the important work you're actually employed to do. This isn't a lack of skill. You know exactly how to plan, prioritise and think strategically. You're just not getting the chance to use those abilities, and that gap between who you are as a leader and who you're being right now is a source of quiet, persistent frustration. It shows up daily in the smallest ways: the report to governors finished at 11pm instead of 6pm, the classroom visit you meant to make but didn't, the plan for the week that lasted until Tuesday morning.

At home

That same pressure follows you home, and it's less about competence and more about attention. Work is bleeding into the parts of your life that matter most, and you're noticing the cost even if nobody else is complaining directly. Your partner has mentioned you seem preoccupied, that you don't chat over dinner the way you used to. Your children are becoming more independent and increasingly go to your partner first with the things that matter to them, not because anything's gone wrong between you, but because that's simply where the current pattern has settled, and it stings more than you expected. You're also saying no to friends more often, particularly on school nights, and you're not entirely comfortable with why. These aren't crises. They're small, cumulative signs that you're not showing up as the present, engaged version of yourself you know you can be, and that quiet erosion is harder to name than a single bad day, which makes it harder to fix.

Underneath it all

Underneath all of it is something more physical and practical, and it's the thing you're most likely to ignore. You've noticed you're catching more colds, feeling more run down, and there's a health check-up you keep meaning to book and keep putting off. You tell yourself you'll sort it once things calm down, but you also recognise the irony: you'd never accept this reactive approach from a member of your own staff, yet here you are, doing exactly that to yourself. Alongside this, your parents are ageing and beginning to need more from you, adding a layer of caring responsibility on top of an already full plate. None of this feels dramatic day to day. It shows up as tiredness that isn't just physical, decision-making that feels slightly harder some mornings, and a nagging sense that you're running on borrowed time rather than a full tank. You're not burnt out. You're not in crisis. You're a capable, strategic leader who has been operating below your natural level for too long, and you know it.
